Used plastics are “frozen fuel” claims British Plastics Federation

Used plastics are frozen fuel and the energy from them can be recovered in energy from waste incineration, was the message this week from the British Plastics Federation ahead of a tour of Danish efw plants.

Peter Davis, director general of the BPF which has organised the tour with the Energy from Waste Association and plastic materials organisation Valuplast, said: “The BPF has played a key role in organising this tour for senior local authority councillors and officials. It is important to demonstrate that energy recovery is clean, efficient and publicly acceptable. Nowhere is that better demonstrated than in environmentally conscious Denmark.”

Brian Smith, director of Valuplast, said that he considered the visit would be very useful because energy from waste is missing in some parts of the debate about waste management options in the UK.

“We are firmly behind minimisation programmes and are happy that, where appropriate, re-use systems should be developed, but not where it is not the best solution.

“Clearly we are greatly behind recycling but our concern is that the regulators may require us to recycle levels of material that are unenvironmental to recycle.”

The event takes place from 7-10 February.
