Universities publish guide to improve waste management

The Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges (EAUC) has published a guide to help education institutions improvement the management of their waste.

The guide has been produced because there are 700 further and higher education institutions teaching seven million students in the UK and the sector has been struggling to minimise the large amount of waste it produces.

Until now, there has been no specific advice to address the sector's needs, but “A Practical Guide to Waste Management for Universities and Colleges” hopes to fill this gap. The guide contains information on how to conduct a waste review, how to minimise waste production and recycle as well as how to set up a waste management system and ensure the best contract with waste operators.

Legal compliance, national and EU policy are also covered as well as information on pending legislation and directives and their implications for waste management and disposal.

Kay Gilby, convenor of EAUC and environmental officer at Nottingham Trent University, said: “There are few “step by step” or “how to do it” guides on waste management and those that do exist have clear industry focus. In recognition of this, EAUC commissioned a waste management guide specifically for the Further and Higher Education sector. The outcome is this practical guide which takes readers through the various stages of waste management from identifying the waste streams to minimising and disposing of waste, whilst ensuring legal compliance.”
