B2B Compliance, an initiative of the GAMBICA trade association of the scientific equipment sector, will work with lighting industry scheme Lumicom in order to locate a logistics and recycling company able to deal with their WEEE. The companies have jointly advertised for expressions of interest.
Under Europe's WEEE Directive, producers of electronic goods will be responsible for the recycling of products they put on the market from 2006. Many of these companies will fulfil their responsibility through the use of compliance schemes.
Lumicom, an initiative of the Lighting Industry Federation, will be taking on responsibilities for non-household luminaries. The company, which has over 70 members, is one of the many product specific compliance schemes for WEEE.
Industry experts have said that these “niche” compliance schemes may join with bigger schemes or other niche schemes in order to fulfil compliance in a more cost effective way.
B2B currently has over 200 members signed up to its scheme and covers a much wider spectrum of WEEE related products.
Benefit
Commenting on the partnership Geoff Young, chief executive of GAMBICA, said: “While the schemes will operate independently to meet their own members' legal obligations it can only be of mutual benefit to exploit the synergies of using joint logistics and recycling facilities.”
Mr Young's comments were echoed by the chief executive of the Light Industry Federation, Ernest Magog.
Both schemes, which are now members of the not-for-profit sector European WEEE Forum, are using the services of strategic environmental consultants Strateco. The company will carry out the tendering process on their behalf.
