Joanne Baggott, Sankey's communications representative said wheelie bins are normally imported then distributed by UK firms. “There's a massive shortage of wheelie bins and Sankey was looking to expand,” she explained.
An exhibit at the recent Chartered Institution of Wastes Management annual conference has generated a lot of interest in the products, said Ms Baggott.
The bins which can be used for normal domestic waste and recyclabes, conform to British Standards, and have high-impact strength, Sankey's commercial manager Terry Cheetham said. They feature a reinforced front form, double-axle support, a reinforced base and pre-prepared code chip and are guaranteed for 10 years.
Sankey is also investigating the viability of using recycled materials in the manufacturing of the bins.
Convertbins
Meanwhile, Winchester-based Convertbins is marketing new domestic recycling bins. The indoor, stacking bins – or “modules” – come in a range of colours and have a 37 litre capacity. They can be used with or without bags, and have a “scoop” design so that the bins can be used while stacked.
Convertbins said three units would provide enough storage space for all the recyclables generated in a week by the average four-person household.
