Two “strong bids” for waste PFI in Shropshire

The Shropshire Waste Partnership has invited the two remaining bidders for its major long term waste management contract to submit their final offers.

The Waste Partnership is currently tendering for a 25-year waste contract, which is backed by 35.8 million worth of private finance initiative credits.

” We will use the next few months to further engage the issues that we picked out during the previous stages “
– Frank Mulgrew, Shropshire Waste Partnership

Shropshire had previously said that it would look over the bids earlier put forward by Onyx and Biffa as part of the previous stage of the bidding. The Partnership would then decide whether to go straight to a preferred bidder or further negotiate with both companies.

Following a meeting this Monday, Frank Mulgrew, executive officer for the partnership, told letsrecycle.com that strong bids were received from both companies.

“We are hoping to get best and final offers back from both Biffa and Onyx in February,” he said. “We will use the next few months to further engage the issues that we picked out during the previous stages, including the kind of technologies that each company can provide us.”

Mr Mulgrew added that there was a good feeling in Shropshire thanks to the strength of the two bids. PFI contracts across the UK have come across problems in recent months because of companies dropping out.

He said: “I know there has been a lot of speculation as to what was happening in Shropshire, especially after Gloucestershire and West Berkshire have recently suffered problems. But in Shropshire things are going very well.”

Director

The waste partnership is also currently looking for a new director. Applications for the post close on 23 December, and it is hoped the successful applicant will be appointed by the end of February 2006.
