The new general manager is Helen Donnelly and Jeni Mackay is the new information officer at the group. Both formerly worked for SEPA, where Ms Donnelly was waste data manager and Ms Mackay was part of the National Waste Strategy Team.
Ms Donnelly, who has also worked for South Lanarkshire council and as a private sector environmental and waste management consultant, said: “Organisations such as RAGS and the CRNS are vital to the success of the National Waste Strategy for Scotland and in moving towards more sustainable waste management practices.
“I intend to build on the strong foundations already established by RAGS in the last 10 years and look forward to working with both the RAGS Executive and the CRNS Executive to ensure the longer term stability and future development of these organisations.”
Ms Mackay will be working for both RAGS and the Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS) producing the organisations' newsletters and developing the websites. Her post is funded by the Scottish Executive's support for the CRNS and so will have a high profile amongst the CRNS projects and activities.
Tony Cassidy, RAGS chairman, said: “Helen and Jeni's arrival at RAGS heralds another new phase for the organisation. With the increased emphasis on recycling the role of RAGS is more significant than ever and so it is important that we have the resources to deliver. The knowledge and experience which Helen and Jeni bring with them will not only benefit the organisation but more importantly the whole RAGS membership.”
Since 1993, RAGS has been coordinating the promotion of recycling in Scotland and has 105 member organisations. In March 2002, RAGS launched the CRNS with a 34,900 grant from the Scottish Executive Action Fund to focus on working with the community recycling sector. Currently, CRNS has a membership of over 50 community based groups.
