Twenty-nine teams to compete for Waste World Cup

Metal recycling firm Sims Metal Management face a stern test to retain its Waste World Cup crown after the fixtures for the seventh annual mixed-gender six-a-side football tournament were announced today (September 1).

The tournament, which is set to take place on Friday (September 4), will see 29 teams compete in the one-day event on the Park Campus of the University of Northampton.

In the draw, defending champions Sims head up Group E with waste management firm Viridor, the London borough of Hounslow, Bristol-based MITIE and Environmental and the government-funded research body the Waste & Resources Action Programme.

Sims ran out winners in last year's competition following a tense 2-0 win over Bristol-based consultancy firm Eunomia in wet and murky conditions (see letsrecycle.com story).

Elsewhere in the tournament, which is organised by letsrecycle.com and the University of Northampton, last year's defeated finalists Eunomia will face off against the second of four teams entered by waste management company SITA UK, consultancy firm PPS Recovery System and organics specialists New Earth Solutions Group in the only group of four.

The day also hosts a crossbar challenged sponsored by waste and recycling software system company REgenerist, which was jointly won last year by Grundon's Maria Shotton and ACM Waste Management's Gracie Leslie.

Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “The day offers a real chance for people across the waste management and recycling sector to meet and let off steam with some football fun.”

Dr Margaret Bates of the University of Northampton said: “The success of the day is down to you and your team. Whilst we expect fast paced action, breathtaking skills and high drama we also expect sporting behaviour and respect. Don't forget today's opponents could be tomorrow's clients.”
