A statement from the scheme said that Mr Gaffney “is joining The Wastepack Group as Director of Compliance from the Environment Agency where he is currently Manager of the National Waste Registration Unit”.
Mr Gaffney has not been directly involved in regulating Wastepack. The scheme is registered with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, even though it has its head office in Hertfordshire and a number of projects in England.
A spokesman for Wastepack said that Mr Gaffney will head Wastepack Compliance which operates the second largest UK registered scheme for the packaging waste regulations. “He will also ensure that the recycling infrastructure which Wastepack is creating supports the requirements of the future extensions of producer responsibility legislation.”
Barry Van Danzig, Chief Executive of Wastepack, said “Peter Gaffney has a broad experience of compliance and recycling issues and will be a great asset to Wastepack as we invest in new collection and recycling facilities in partnership with local authorities”.
Mr Gaffney is expected to take up his new post in April.
