Noor Taswar, aged 18 months, was killed following the incident yesterday, around 3.30pm, in Newmarket Road, Ashton-under-Lyne.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement that “the child died at the scene after becoming trapped under the wheels of the 30-tonne lorry”.
No-one else was injured but the driver was believed to have been taken to hospital suffering from shock.
Police are investigating but no arrests have been made and a police spokeswoman said that at the moment the girl's death is being viewed as a “tragic accident”.
Regional newspaper the Greater Manchester Evening News reports that Noor was with her mother and four-year-old brother at the time of the accident. The boy is believed to have slipped from his mother's hand and as she tried to grab him, the pushchair fell off the pavement and into the path of the oncoming vehicle.
A spokeswoman for Droylsden-based Hadfield Wood Recyclers confirmed its vehicle was involved in the collision.
She said: “Hadfields is a family-run firm which has been in Droylsden for nearly 30 years and we are extremely shocked and saddened by the accident. We would like to send our deepest sympathies to the little girl's family.
“We are cooperating fully with the police investigation but are unable to say anything further at this time.”
Hadfields processes waste wood at its facility in Lumm Farm, Droylsden, and its recycled products include animal bedding, panel board and wood chip biomass fuel.
Middlesborough-based UK Wood Recycling, which supplies wood chip to the Sembcorp Biomass Power Station in Tees Valley, is its sister company.
