Toby Perkins MP has been elected as the new chair of the Environmental Audit Committee.

A secret ballot of MPs took place on Wednesday (11 September 2024) with votes being cast counted under the Alternative Vote system.

Barry Gardiner MP received 268 votes.

The full list of elected committee chairs for the new Parliament was announced in the House of Commons by the speaker, Lindsay Hoyle MP. Barry Gardiner MP received 268 votes.

Following the election result, Perkins said: “I am honoured to have been elected chair of the Environmental Audit Committee. I am grateful to all those colleagues who supported me and look forward to working with all members across the House to make sure this government delivers on the environment.

“I have a personal stake in our country’s efforts to respond to the dual climate and nature crises. The community I serve was badly hit by flooding in 2007 and 2023. As shadow environment minister in the last Parliament, I was a passionate advocate for action on climate and nature, be that water quality or the restoration of biodiversity at home and abroad. I care deeply about these issues, and I am intent on making sure the Government delivers on its promises.

“As chair, I will work across party lines and with communities, businesses, and experts to lead a committee focused squarely on finding solutions to the environmental challenges we face.”

The elected member takes up their position as chair of the committee when the remaining members of the committee have been appointed by the house.
