Tissue company fined 8,000 for recycling offences

A Bolton tissue manufacturer has been fined 8,000 for failing to comply with the packaging waste regulations.

Sashpoint Limited of Sash House, Lostock, Bolton, which manufactures a range of tissue products including toilet rolls, pleaded guilty to four offences at Bolton Magistrates' Court. The company was also ordered to pay 856.36 costs to the Environment Agency, which brought the prosecution.

David Bradley, prosecuting for the Agency, told the court how the company, had saved between 2,285 and 2,918 by not registering in 1998 and 1999.

Mr Bradley said that the company failed to either register with the Agency during 1998 and 1999 or to make adequate arrangements for the recovery of packaging waste. The offences came to light after an Environment Agency officer made checks on the company in January 2001. By this time the company had taken steps to comply with the regulations and had registered with the Agency for the year 2000.

Mr Bradley told the court subsequent checks by the Environment Agency confirmed that the company’s turnover, and the amount of packaging it handled, made it likely Sashpoint should have been registered prior to 2000. The company was exempt from the regulations in 1997, as it’s turnover was less than 5 million.
