Time is running out to enter the 2005 Awards for Excellence, which will recognise achievements in the world of recycling waste management in October.

The Awards for Excellence is taking place at a grand luncheon at London's Savoy Hotel on October 21

The big event, which is to be held during a glittering luncheon at the Savoy Hotel in London, takes place on October 19.

A champagne reception and plush lunch will precede the ceremony, which will see nine companies, local authorities and individuals rewarded for their hard work over the 2004/05 calendar year.

Entry to the letsrecycle.com-organised awards could not be simpler, individual projects only asked for a few hundred words on their achievements and any supporting material they care to add.

Projects selected for the final shortlist will have representatives invited to the awards ceremony.

The nine awards cover a broad swathe of the recycling and waste sector, including local authorities, waste management companies and commercial waste producers. Eurostar won last year's commercial waste management initiative in a tough category that also included HSBC.

There are a number of categories for local authorities and local authority officers to enter – collection crew of the year, CA site of the year, local authority recycling champion, best local authority recycling initiative and best waste industry and local authority partnership.

With several councils already claiming to be recycling almost 50% of their waste as 2004/05 results are reported to government, there should be plenty of projects worthy of consideration by the judges on September 15.

As well as showing off their local authority partnership skills, waste management companies can also enter the innovation in design of a waste facility category. This category will reward a waste management facility somewhere in the UK, like last year's winner SITA UK, which won the award for its energy for waste plant on the Isle of Man.

Commenting on the Awards, event organiser Will Hurn said: “We have had some excellent entries already and this year's awards should be as well contested as last years. We would hope that the judges will have to consider all of the excellent projects that we know are taking place in the UK waste and recycling sector at this point in time.”
