Time running out for entries to Awards for Excellence

Time is running out for local authorities to apply for the 2004 Awards for Excellence, organised by letsrecycle.com and Resource Management & Recovery magazine to recognise achievements in sustainable waste management.

The awards seek to recognise achievements across the waste sector, including successes in commercial and industrial organisations (see letsrecycle.com story), but also the accomplishments
of local authorities.

”Those achieving great results should be rewarded, and we should bring the brightest and best approaches to a wider audience.” “
– John Burns, WIP

Defra's Waste Implementation Programme is supporting the awards, and is sponsoring the Local Authority Recycling Champion category, which will recognise the councillor or council officer who has achieved a very high level of success in driving up household waste recycling rates.

Head of WIP John Burns said: “I am delighted that Defra are involved with this very worthwhile event recognising excellence in local authorities and the waste management industry. Those who are achieving great results should be rewarded, and we should also try to bring the brightest and best approaches to a wider audience.”

Environment minister Elliot Morley is also supporting the awards and will be giving the keynote address at the ceremony at the Savoy Hotel in London on October 21.

”We really want to encourage applications from local authorities who collect a broad range of materials, who establish innovative systems to make recycling easier for the public.“
– Colin Ilies, EMR

CA site
As well as Local Authority Champion, the Awards for Excellence are also looking to find the CA site of the year – this awards category has been sponsored by European Metal Recycling, and will bring to light the civic amenity site or household waste recycling centre that has achieved strong performances in recycling, awareness-raising and improved waste management.

Colin Iles, managing director at EMR, explained: “We really want to encourage applications from local authorities who collect a broad range of materials, who establish innovative systems to make recycling easier for the public and who target difficult wastes such as plastic packaging and electrical items to meet the demands of emerging legislation.”

Local authorities are also to be recognised for their work in the local authority recycling initiative category, sponsored by paper recycler Abitibi-Consolidated. This category highlights a project developed and delivered by a council or waste authority to promote recycling either directly or indirectly. This could be working with green waste or multi-material material streams, or might involve work on communication campaigns.
