The event will be held on June 21 2006 and the council is hoping to hear from all companies in the waste treatment sector.
The council's current waste disposal contract, currently held by SITA-subsidiary Shropshire Waste Management, comes to an end in 2009 prompting the council to look for a new contractor.
Unitary council Telford and Wrekin has estimated that around the year 2010/11 it will need to start buying landfill allowances if it is to avoid government fines for missing its landfill targets.
The council hopes a new waste treatment contract could lessen the need to buy landfill allowances, which could become expensive as landfill targets around the country become more difficult.
Technologies
Mechanical biological treatment and incineration have been suggested as possible solutions, but Sally Sheward, waste technical officer (procurement), told letsrecycle.com that the council had not ruled out the possibility of using other technologies.
She said: “We would not preclude any one that wants to come and talk about alternatives.”
The contract will be long term, running alongside the council's waste strategy which will be reviewed in 2020/21 – the contract may however run longer than this. It is estimated that around 65,000 tonnes of household waste will be produced by 2020/21 in Telford and Wrekin.
Four sites have already been indicated for a new plant in the borough as part of the authority's pre-submission consultation draft waste development plan.
Ms Sheward added: “Through our bidder open day we want to tell people about the project and we want to allow companies to come and tell us what they can offer us. It will start the tender process off by engaging the market.”
A full timeline for establishing the contract is yet to be confirmed.
