Teenager killed in Rhondda collection vehicle accident

Investigations are continuing today into an accident yesterday morning (August 21) in which a 16-year-old-girl who was killed in an incident with a reversing collection vehicle operated by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in South Wales.

The girl, Esther Bush, of Cwmparc, Rhonnda died at the scene of the accident in Conway Street, Cwmparc, Treorchy. She is understood to have been trapped under the vehicle. The work of the vehicle is thought to have been the collection of goods such as fridges and it was open topped rather than being a standard refuse collection vehicle.

A spokesman for the local authority told letsrecycle.com today that it was “assisting the ongoing South Wales Police investigation into the tragedy, in which a young girl died following an incident involving a local authority vehicle.

Investigations

“Investigations remain very much ongoing at this time. As such, it would be inappropriate to comment further. We are fully cooperating with the police and our thoughts and sympathies remain with the girl's family and friends at this time.”

A further statement is expected from South Wales Police later today. A police spokeswoman said: “a full investigation is underway. One man is helping police with their enquiries in relation to the incident.”

She added: “A police family liaison officer is supporting Esther's family at this difficult time.”

Today, (August 22), South Wales Police said that the man who helping police with their enquiries in relation to the incident has been released on police bail. Witnesses to the incident, or anyone else with information, have been asked to call the roads policing team on 029 2063 3438.
