Supermarket fined 10,700 in packaging waste prosecution

A South Wales supermarket has been fined 10,700 for failing to comply with the packaging waste regulations.

CK’s Supermarket, which owns nine stores in South West Wales, was prosecuted at Swansea Magistrates court after pleading guilty to six offences under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations. The case was brought by the Environment Agency Wales who was awarded costs of 1,436.

The court was told that CK’s Supermarket registered in 1997, but failed to register in subsequent years. The court noted that CK’s had failed to co-operate fully with Environment Agency Wales during its investigation, and contrary to the mitigation offered by the business, CK’s Supermarket were aware of their obligations in 1998 but had failed to discharge them.

An Agency spokesperson said: “These Regulations ensure that businesses involved in the manufacture, supply and use of packaging share the environmental costs of the recovery and recycling of packaging waste. Businesses which do not co-operate with the Agency during its investigations will normally be prosecuted.”
