Under the contract, Straight will provide wheeled bins, caddies, compostable liners and steel bins for the collection of recyclables and food waste as part of services company Sercos waste collection and street cleansing contract with the city council.
The council renewed its contract with Serco in October 2012 (see letsrecycle.com story). The new 40 million, eight-year contract begins on April 1 2012 and will see Serco introducing a new waste collection system which will include fortnightly doorstep collection of glass for the first time and a return to weekly collections of food waste.
Straight said it will assist with the service change and will provide:
- 240 litre wheeled bins with a 55 litre wheeled bin inner caddy. The bins will be used for the collection of mixed recyclables and the caddy for paper and card;
- 1,100 litre Steelybin metal bins for the collection of mixed recyclables in communal areas; and,
- 23 litre and 5 litre caddies for the weekly collection of food waste. In addition, each household will also be issued with a roll of Straight Compost-a-Bag compostable liners.

Robin Davies, development director for Serco, said that the contract with Straight would play an important role in servicing its renewed contract in Canterbury.
