The Leeds-based company, which acquired local rivals Blackwall last year, said its large production and stock holding capabilities had given it a “huge advantage” over competitors in bidding for the contract.
Straight will supply 220 litre and 330 litre compost bins under the Blackwall brand. A new kitchen waste composter, developed by Straight, is also to be included in the trial to allow householders to compost cooked foods as well as meat, fish and dairy products.
The new arrangement with the government-funded Waste and Resources Action Programme will see 300,000 home composters produced, in the third year of WRAP's home composting campaign.
Bulk
The deal represents the bulk of WRAP's target to supply half a million home compost bins through 2006.

The company said more than 90% of the composters would be manufactured in the UK, with the remainder made in Germany.
Paul Crayton, supply chain manager at Straight plc is confident that the demands of the WRAP contract would not prove a problem. “We have a huge advantage over our competitors as we have large production and stock holding capabilities both in the UK and in Europe, allowing us to supply our numerous local authority contracts and WRAP within days if required.”
