Straight joins OnePlastics manufacturing group

The new owners of container manufacturer Straight have said the company will not be rebranded following its takeover, but will offer a more comprehensive range of products to local authority clients.

The well-recognised Leeds-based manufacturer was taken over by Irish firm One51 in the summer for around £10.7 million (see letsrecycle.com). One51 specialises in plastics moulding, owning wheeled-bin manufacturer MGB Plastics, which it acquired in 2008, as well as injection moulding firm AAC Plastics and paint container manufacturer Protech Plastics.

One51 has created the ‘OnePlastics Group’ brand, bringing together each of the businesses within its portfolio, but the firm says that each of the companies will continue to maintain their identity within existing markets.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com One Plastics’ commercial director Conor Sugrue, said: “We felt that Straight was a good fit with our business because of their specialism with items like kitchen caddies. We felt that would give us a complete portfolio.

“Both companies [Straight and MGB] will continue to operate under their individual brands as they are well established within the UK.”

Mr Sugrue told letsrecycle.com that there are no plans to move operations from Straight’s Hull manufacturing base, where products such as food waste caddies, kerbside recycling boxes and plastic wheeled containers are made.

Cost

He also noted that the strong presence of Straight and MGB within the UK market could help to reduce costs for clients. The firm boasts local authority customers including Wycombe & Chiltern, Sefton, Eastbourne & Wealden, Lambeth, East Herts and Darlington councils.

“A lot of the players in this market are overseas and there are a lot of imports coming from abroad. We think as a UK based supplier we can offer a better deal in terms of price and on the carbon footprint.”

Mr Sugrue added: “Bringing all the businesses together with all their different capabilities makes sense from a strategic level and also gives our customers access to a very strong offering in terms of price, service and innovation.

“As part of our growth policy we will continue to invest in the businesses within OnePlastics Group. This will allow us to maintain the highest quality standards, employ talented staff and continue leading the market with new products.”
