Ed Gallagher, chief executive of the Environment Agency, has been awarded a CBE for services to the environment. Mr Gallagher leaves the agency shortly, and during his term in office he has overseen the strengthening of waste management work and increasing involvement by agency officials in recycling policy.
Three OBEs have gone to the environment and waste sector.
Jeffery Bartlett, who stepped down recently as director generally of the Paper Federation received the OBE as did Alison Austin, head of environmental and technical communications for J Sainsbury plc. Ms Austin received the honour for services to the environment and to sustainable development. She is credited with developing a strong recycling policy for the retail chain and was involved in the early days of the packaging waste regulations.
Professor Stanley Dagg also received an OBE for services to waste management.
An MBE went to Dr Ian White, formerly with the Environment Agency as a regional waste manager for services to waste regulation.
In recent months Dr White has appeared with the team of experts supporting the Mayer Parry case which argues that recyclers should be able to issue packaging waste recovery notes (PRNs) rather than reprocessors (such as the steelworks).
