Southend awards 43 million contract to Cory

Representatives of the council and Cory celebrate an increase in recycling rates following the introduction of a new recycling service in 2007

Southend-on-Sea borough council has awarded a £43 million waste collection contract to London-based Cory Environmental Municipal Services in a bid to help boost its recycling rate to 60% by 2015.

The deal – worth £6.2 million a year over seven years – builds on the existing partnership between the waste management company and the South-East council, with Cory having held Southend's waste and recycling refuse collection contract since 1990 – providing collections of dry recyclables, garden waste and residual waste (see letsrecycle.com story).

Starting from Monday, September 29, Cory will now also provide a food waste collection service, which was successfully trialled in the borough last year, and take over the running of the council's two household waste and recycling centres at Stock Road, Southend, and Two Tree Island.

The new contract also includes the provision for Cory to work with local charities and organisations in the voluntary sector to reuse items of furniture and household equipment.

Councillor Ian Robertson, Southend-on-Sea borough council's executive councillor for public protection and waste, said: “We are very proud of the recycling success we have achieved so far in partnership with Cory Environmental Municipal Services and our residents. Together we all helped reach a 34% recycling rate in 2007-08, beating our 32% target.”

Partnership

Cllr Robertson called the ongoing partnership with Cory “very productive” and encouraged continued close work between the two parties in order for the council to meet its target of achieving a 60% recycling rate by 2015.

Paul Redman, director of Cory Environmental Municipal Services, said: “I am delighted that Cory Environmental Municipal Services has won this prestigious new contract. It will enable us to build on our existing partnership with the council, to provide even better services and improved recycling rates.”
