South Oxfordshire rejects organic collection

South Oxfordshire council has decided not to set up a separate collection of organic waste until the Government resolves which types of waste can be accepted for composting.

Councillors warned that they were unwilling to implement the separate collection of biodegradable waste without such a decision.

But they admitted this would mean that the authority would be unlikely to achieve the performance standards set for 2003/04 and 2005/06.

The council called on the government to decide on the definition of acceptable waste for both windrow and in-vessel composting.

It said that all forms of organic waste should be accepted for in-vessel treatment where the scientific evidence suggests that the risks would be low.
