Solihull recycling rates hit ‘six-year high’

New figures from Department for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) have shown that Solihull is said to have achieved a recycling rate of 41.5% in the year to March 2023.

The council recently launched a new free small item collection service

Solihull council has said that its rate is the “highest out of the West Midlands Combined Authority constituent authorities” and the “best in the borough” since 2016/17.

Solihull council’s cabinet member for environment and infrastructure, Ken Hawkins, said: “We are really encouraged by our latest recycling rates for 2022/23, which coincides with changes to how we treat wood waste and street sweepings which mean they now count towards our recycling figures.

“However, there is still more we can all do to increase recycling to help us meet our net zero carbon emissions targets, and combat climate change.”

‘Easier than ever before’

Mr Hawkins continued: “Recycling is now easier than ever before thanks to a new state-of-the-art recycling facility which means Solihull residents no longer need to separate glass from their other recycling.

“We have also just launched a new free small item collection service to collect unwanted small electrical items, household batteries, paint and clothing.”
