Snowdon waste walk to raise money for charity

A charity event will see walkers flock to Mount Snowdon this summer in order to raise money for waste management projects in the third world.

Walkers of all abilities will assemble at the bottom of the mountain on Saturday 16 July with a view to watch the sunset from Wales’ highest peak – before making their way back down.

The ‘Walk for Waste’ fundraising event has been set up by LARAC vice chair Sally Talbot in aid of WasteAidUK – which supports project to introduce sustainable waste systems in third world countries.

Working with local partners and donor organisations, the charity’s goal is to increase spending on waste management from 0.3% to 3% of all international aid.

The walk, which begins at 6pm, will follow the 10-mile Llanberis Path up Snowdon – a gradual climb that will reach a final height of over 3,500 feet at the summit.

The long but easy ascent means the event will be open to all ages, but participants are advised to bring a torch for the descent – with the event not due to finish until 11pm.

Sponsorship

Up to 200 people are expected to sign up for the expedition, with each walker expected to raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship – as well as £20 to assist in the cost of hiring a mountain guide team.

Speaking to letsrecycle.com, Ms Talbot explained that the funds would be used to support “much-needed” practical projects.

“Waste management is something that we probably take for granted here in the UK but is lacking in many developing countries. Without it there is a much higher incident of disease and environmental degradation,” she added.

Expertise

Mike Webster, WasteAidUK chair, said: “The Walk for Waste will follow the Llanberis Trail – one of the most popular routes to the top of Mount Snowdon. We’re hoping plenty of people will join us to raise funds for WasteAid UK so we can continue sharing waste management expertise with those who really need it.”
