Smith Anderson to build recycling facility for used beverage cartons

One of the first commercial recycling facilities for beverage cartons in the UK will be set up in Scotland following a deal between the Liquid Food Carton Manufacturers Association and Smith Anderson.

Smith Anderson, one of Europe's largest recyclers and manufacturers of paper and paper packaging products, will work with the association to develop carton collection schemes across the UK and the Republic of Ireland and will carry out reprocessing at its existing site in Leslie, Fife.

This follows two years of trials of using materials derived from the cartons, which have long fibres and are made from virgin pulp, mainly from pine and spruce trees in sustainably-managed forests in northern Europe. Paper comprises some 75-90 % of the content of beverage cartons.

The company’s commercial director Stephen Hutt said: “This is the first commercial site in the UK for the reprocessing of cartons and continues our commitment to find alternative fibre sources.”
