SITA&#39s north-eastern and Scottish sites win standards approval

SITA Waste Management has been given environmental management accreditation for its sites throughout North East England and Scotland.

The awards have been handed to seven of SITA's landfill sites, nine waste transfer stations and 19 civic amenity sites from Sunderland to Aberdeen. SGS Yarsley International Ltd, who gave the accreditation to SITA, also made awards covering the company's fleet of 50 waste collection vehicles and the waste depot at Herrington in Sunderland.

Upgrading the quality standards of the sites to BS ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001, the accreditation is recognition of the quality and environmental management systems that have produced continuous improvement at SITA's sites.

Peter Toffrey, the company's quality and environmental manager said: “We are very proud of the sites' achievements to gain the accreditations, as they represent another step forward in the development of the facilites.”

SITA currently serves over 12 million people and 35,000 businesses in the UK, handling over 7.5 million tonnes of waste, and its 7,500 employees produce an annual turnover of more than 500 million.

However, despite the awards, SITA is still looking for further improvements in both the environmental and operational performance at the newly accredited sites. According to Peter Holmes, who works at the combined civic amenity site and transfer station in Hexham, they already have the systems in place to do this. He said: “The overall aim of the systems is to make sure that this site is more effective and keeps on improving the service it brings to the public and other customers.”
