SITA UK opens 2.5m MRF in Dorset

The facility at Binnegar Eco Park began operating at the start of December and can handle 20,000 tonnes of commercial dry mixed recyclables per year.

Cardboard, paper, plastics, cans, polythene and textiles are all accepted and sorted at the facility, which SITA says will help to reduce the landfill tax burden of businesses in the area.

The merchant facility uses equipment made by Northern Irish-based recycling machinery manufacturer Kiverco and collects waste from a number of commercial organisations, including South West Trains.

Enabling works began for the MRF towards the end of 2011, with construction commencing on the facility in Spring 2012.

Planning permission for SITA to build a recycling facility at the site, located two miles from Wareham, was first granted by Dorset county council in April 2008 (see letsrecycle.com story).

The recycling firm employs 14 staff members to work at the facility, of which ten are new SITA appointments. The company employs a total of 150 people across Dorset and Hampshire.

A spokesman for SITA UK said that more space is available at the site to potentially develop further waste related facilities in future, but that nothing is planned at present.
