SITA relaunches Leicestershire County Compost

SITA and Leicestershire county council re-launched their green waste compost this week in a bid to promote the product to local gardeners.

SITA has been producing compost with Leicestershire since 1998 at its two composting facilities at Kibwoth and Lount. The county produces about 35,000 tonnes of compost each year.

After seven months' preparation, Organo County Compost has been re-launched in time for the traditional start of the gardening season, with an advertising campaign on Leicestershire buses, redesigned bags, and new information boards at the 14 civic amenity sites where garden waste is collected.

SITA composting manager Dr Stephen Wise told letsrecycle.com: “The idea is to raise the profile of County Compost and really push it a lot more. We want to make what's happening much more visible to the public.”

Peter Winkless, Leicestershire county council cabinet member for the environment, said: “I am delighted that unwanted green waste is being recycled to produce usable organic compost for our Leicestershire gardens, reducing the amount being needlessly landfilled.”

The compost is peat-free and has been approved by the Henry Doubleday Research Association and the Soil Association.
