The company – a subsidiary of global metal recycling firm Sims Group- has bought Halesowen-based metal recycler Evans and Mondon, just seven months after it acquired scrap metal merchant, ER Coley (Steel) Ltd (see letsrecycle.com story).
Now, the company will consolidate the businesses, which are situated on the same industrial estate.
Tom Bird, managing director of Sims Group UK, said: “The West Midlands region is an area of the country where Sims Group is keen to strengthen its foothold. Late last year we acquired ER Coley (Steel) Ltd and the proximity of Evans and Mondon to this site allows for an easy consolidation of the two businesses with a combined total of 100,000 tonnes of metal per annum.
“These two businesses offer the perfect platform for Sims to continue its expansion into the Industrial Heartland of the UK,” he added.
Plans
The Evans and Mondon site, which has been operating in the Midlands since 1947, currently employs 16 members of staff and recycles 30,000 tonnes of metal a year. However, Sims remained tight-lipped over plans for the site beyond consolidation with ER Coley.
A spokesman said: “As an ever-growing business, there are always plans to increase volume and in turn this may affect the number of employees. There is currently a very small amount of equipment on-site but obviously, if the volume increases, we will incorporate the equipment in this growth.”
Details of the cost of the purchase could not be divulged due to company confidentiality but, as with the purchase of ER Coley, Sims was advised on the acquisition by the Birmingham office of international law firm Eversheds.
The Sims Group currently operates 200 sites globally, earning 70% of its A$ 8.5 billion (£4.11 billion) annual turnover from international operations in the UK, Europe, North America, New Zealand and Asia.
