The company used to operate a MRF on the site with a 125,000 tonne-a-year-capacity. But, after securing planning permission earlier this year (see letsrecycle.com story), the plant was overhauled and the MRF capacity has now almost doubled to 215,000 tonnes-a-year.
Due to be fully operational in early 2012, the MRF will process over 200,000 tonnes-a-year of non-segregated industrial and commercial waste, achieving a 70% recovery rate. The facility will also sort commingled dry mixed recyclables including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, cardboard, paper, plastic and wood.
At full capacity, the two hectare facility will create 35 new jobs and will take Shanks UK recycling capacity to over 1.2 million tonnes.
Machinex
Equipment for the MRF was supplied by Canadian firm Machinex. The design provided by Machinex aims to recover 75% of rigid plastics, paper, cardboard and ferrous processed into the system via mechanical separation such as shredder, trommel, heavy-light separator, magnetand optical units.
Commissioning of the Kettering MRF follows the recent official opening of Shanks new MRF and anaerobic digestion (AD) facilities in Glasgow (see letsrecycle.com story), and the commencement of construction of its new 60,000 tonnes per year AD facility in Bicester (see letsrecycle.com story).

Ian Goodfellow, Shanks UK managing director, said: At Shanks, we continue to invest in highly automated recycling and recovery technology to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill and incineration. We see waste as a valuable resource and are very pleased that with the opening of our new MRF in Kettering we can recover even more material.
