Severnside signs waste contract with food giant RHM

Severnside Recycling has signed a multi-million pound contract to provide waste management services for food manufacturer RHM.

RHM has 69 manufacturing sites in the UK and Europe, marketing its products under brands including Hovis, Mr Kipling, Bisto and Sharwoods as well as manufacturing goods for Marks & Spencers and McDonalds. The company has annual sales of about 1,700 million and employs 20,000 people.

Severnside is to work to improve the environmental performance of RHM, it said.

The company has brought all its waste management arrangements in the UK together under one integrated waste management contract. This will include dry waste, specials, animal by-products and recycling.

Severnside's Tim Price said: “The overall aim is to reduce waste to landfill and improve recovery rates, whilst recognising the economic impact of sustainable waste management practices – reducing costs. RHM are committed to exploring, with Severnside, innovative waste management alternatives to landfill.”

Through its parent company, packaging firm DS Smith, Severnside acquired BPB Recycling over the summer in a bid to create a national network of recycling facilities for its major customers (see letsrecycle.com story).
