Seven women in waste honoured on Powerlist 2025

Ahead of International Women’s Day tomorrow (8 March 2025), seven women from the resources and waste sector have featured on the Women in Trade Associations Powerlist 2025 (the WiTA).

The list included three members of the Wood Recyclers’ Association (WRA).

The 100-person list included CEO of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), Sarah Poulter, and three members of the Wood Recyclers’ Association.

Released today (7 February 2025), the list celebrates the best female leaders and sector champions in the UK.

It was compiled by the Trade Association Forum (TAF), Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The panel received over 200 nominations.

Julia Garvey, vice chair of TAF said: “It was an honour to judge this year’s WITA list and to discover more about the outstanding women leaders within our industry. I hope this list shines a light on their achievements and provides the next generation with the inspiration and aspiration to follow in their footsteps.”

The full list of women in the waste sector on the WiTA is:

  • Antonia Grey, head of policy and public affairs at the British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA)
  • Dimitra Rappou, executive director of sustainable products at the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI)
  • Erica Malkin, membership communications manager at the WRA (also communications manager and treasurer for the Stove Industry Association)
  • Julia Turner, executive director of the WRA
  • Karen Betts OBE, chief executive of the Food and Drink Federation (FDF)
  • Sarah Poulter, CEO of CIWM
  • Vicki Hughes, board member and technical lead of the WRA

“Being named on the Powerlist is a wonderful endorsement of our work at the WRA to support our members and advocate on their behalf,” Julia Turner said.

“There are so many brilliant women making an impact in the UK’s trade associations and I’m so pleased that three members of our team have been recognised among them.”

Turner was previously honoured on the inaugural WiTA Powerlist and WiTA Outstanding Member Contribution list respectively.
