The council has called on waste contractor Serviceteam to deliver the boxes, which will be used to dispose of used bottles, jars and paper. They are expected to be with residents by February 21. The council hope the scheme will increase the district’s recycling rate to 16.7% by the financial year 2003-04.
Councillor Alan Calder, waste management portfolio holder, is hopeful that residents will support the scheme. He said: “This is an exciting new service and I’d like to encourage everyone to get right behind it. Making use of the scheme will help resources, save money and help the environment by reducing the waste that goes to landfill. Residents will find it’s much more convenient than making trips to the recycling banks.”
Multi-occupancy households, such as flats, will not receive a box at the outset. The council is looking at how best to include them in the scheme.
