Sector recognised in Queen’s Awards list

Winners of the prestigious Queen’s Awards for Enterprise were announced last week (21 April), with a string of waste and recycling companies noted.

The annually awarded Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are for “outstanding achievement by UK business” in the categories of innovation, international trade, sustainable development and promoting opportunity through social mobility.

This year saw 226 UK businesses receive the award for their contribution.

Ward

The metal recycler Ward uses metal sorting equipment to ‘extract every scrap of metal from end-of-life vehicles’

Metal recycler Ward won the Queen’s Award in the category of International Trade for Outstanding Short Term Growth in overseas sales over the last three years.

The company’s commercial director Thomas Ward said they grew at a rate of 36% per annum, having served customers in Turkey, Egypt, India, and Pakistan. He added that winning the award is “a huge honour for the Ward team.”

The Derbyshire-based company collects and processes around a million tonnes of materials annually, including metals, plastics, glass, cardboard and other. It also said it uses sophisticated metal sorting equipment to extract every scrap of metal from end-of-life vehicles, as well as other waste electronic and electrical items.

According to Mr Ward, the company is planning sustainable growth with “significant future investment into its people, processes, equipment, and infrastructure.”

Other winners from the waste and recycling sector include Staeger Clear Packaging Ltd Coventry, for “the development of box grade food approved British Recycled PET for the transparent packaging industry”.

EDGE Innovate NI Ltd, based in Dungannon, were also noted. The document says the company “manufactures and exports world class material handling and recycling solutions”.
Other awardees were textile recycling company Roberts Recycling Ltd from Liverpool, IT reuse project The Edinburgh Remakery Ltd.

Another award was given to Bambino Mio, a reusable nappy company.

Guy Schanschieff, co-founder and managing director of Bambino Mio, commented: “Further royal recognition from such a prestigious awards body is something that our team is extremely proud of. This is another accolade that acknowledges to the world that we are committed to sustainable development practices and are on a mission to make reusable nappies the first choice to reduce single-use disposable nappy waste.”

The award came ahead of the currently running Reusable Nappy Week (24 April to 1 May), which aims to make reusable nappies the first choice and reduce the waste disposable nappies create.

Now in its 56th year, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the most prestigious business awards in the country, with winning businesses able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards Emblem for the next five years.
