Scottish Executive announces 1m for new composting plants

The Scottish Executive has announced 1 million of funding to build three new composting plants in Cumbernauld, Blantyre and Lugton.

Funding has come through the capital support project for organic waste, which the Waste and Resources Action Programme is managing on behalf of the Executive.

A total of 1, 018,008 has gone to Scottish Water, William Tracey and GP Plantscape for the three composting plants, which have a total project value of 3,991,576.

Announcing the three new composting plants on Thursday, Scotland's environment minister, Ross Finnie, said: “The investment in these facilities will mean a total increase in composting capacity of 57,000 tonnes per year by the time they are fully operational.”

Non-municipal
Mr Finnie said there was still “much to do”, and signalled the Executive's intent to focus more attention on non-municipal waste. He said: “We must be imaginative in the ways we seek to encourage businesses to reduce, re-use and recycle their waste. We will shortly be consulting on a framework on non-municipal waste.”

The Scottish Executive is also to do more work on waste minimisation, encouraging companies to reduce the amount of waste generated by households, as well as providing householders with more information to help them reduce their waste.

Mr Finnie said: “We will consult later this year on a prevention plan for household waste, which will cover areas such as the design of products; providing advice to consumers on how to make choices that minimise waste and action that can be taken in the home to minimise waste.”
