The funds come on top of the 1.69 million announced in March 2002 to assist authorities in disposing of the annual 220,000 units a year now that new Ozone Depleting Substances regulations have come into force.
Making the announcement, Environment and Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie said: “The Scottish Executive is committed to making Scotland cleaner, greener and safer. Ozone depleting substances within fridges and freezers pose significant threats to our environment. It is critical, therefore, that obsolete appliances are disposed of safely.”
He added: “Safe disposal of items containing CFCs is a global problem. The Scottish Executive is working in partnership to meet its obligations under European environmental regulations.”
A substantial portion of the funds will go to central belt authorities, with the largest awards going to Glasgow City with 340,484 and Edinburgh City with 255,132. Other authorities also picked up six-figure funds, including Aberdeenshire (196,608) and Highland (199,211), with the lowest awards made to the Shetland Islands (25,309) and Clackmannanshire (27,531).
