Saxlund to supply RDF handling system for Surrey EfW plant

Energy technology provider Saxlund is to build a bulk material handling system for the storage and discharge of refuse derived fuel (RDF) at the Shepperton gasification plant, to be operated by Suez on behalf of Surrey county council.

The plant, which is currently being constructed by lead contractor M+W Group, is being built as part of a 25-year PFI contract between Suez and the council – originally awarded in 1999. Around 55,000 tonnes per-year of residual waste from homes in the north of the county will be handled at the site.

The gasification facility is a part of an ‘Eco Park’ development which will also include a 40,000 tonnes per year capacity anaerobic digestion plant for the treatment of food waste under development by Monsal. The site also houses a recyclables bulking facility and a community recycling centre.

Technology

Saxlund, which is part of the Trention AB energy and environmental technology group, has been contracted to provide a ‘Push Floor’ fuel storage system for the gasification facility.

According to the company, the design is based on ‘first in first out’ design principles to limit the opportunity for the fuel to degrade or compact.

RDF will then be discharged on demand to a conveying and weighing system which in turn elevates and feeds the RDF to the gasifier fuel feed bins. Saxlund is also providing a storage bunker for 2300 m3 of processed and screened RDF produced at the facility.

Matt Drew, managing director of Saxlund International, said: “We are delighted to be involved with the development of the Eco Park’s gasification facility. Saxlund push floor technology and material handling solutions will help to ensure a highly resilient and robust solution for our clients. The project at Charlton Lane brings the number of UK concurrent gasification and waste to energy projects in which Saxlund material handling technology is involved to 10, all in design & construction.”

Construction work on the gasification plant began in early 2016 – with the plant scheduled to begin commissioning in Spring 2017.
