Sale of stake in composting plant funds brown bin scheme

The sale of shares in its composting plant to Anglian Water has helped Ipswich Borough Council fund the expansion of its brown bin kerbside scheme.

The borough, has already given 3,000 of its 53,000 properties a brown collection bin for compostables with collections made on a fortnightly basis.
Now it has delivered a further 7,000 wheeled bins along with 7,000 mini presort bins for kitchens.

Steve Waugh, Ispwich recycling officer, explained that the expansion of the scheme has been paid in part by the sale of part of its stake in the innovative composting plant run with Anglian Water at the Ipswich sewage works. There a three tunnel system ensures that large volumes of material can be composted to produce soil improver within a two week time frame.

The bins supplied have come in part from Germany’s Klaus Aepfelbach which supplied the original 3,000 and some for the recent second phase. Bins have also come from SSI Schaefer which has secured further orders to supply the next phase of the scheme in 2001 which will see delivery of a further 7,000 bins.

As yet the borough is still to develop a kerbside scheme for other recyclables.
