Richmond-upon-Thames launches reusable bag give-away

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has joined forces with supermarkets in the borough to give away reusable bags to residents in a bid to reduce the amount of waste produced in the area.

Richmond was last week named as Cheshire Recycling's top local authority for paper recycling because it recycles 110 tonnes a week and the council now wants to build on its recycling success with a waste minimisation campaign. Last year the council spent more than 6 million on sending 77,526 tonnes of household waste to landfill and it hopes that its latest waste reduction drive will help to minimise this by raising awareness about the problem.

EcoAction, part of the council's recycling section, will give out reusable shopping bags to customers at Tescos, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose supermarkets in Richmond.

The bags, which are made of durable, printed canvas can be used again and again. The council hopes that the campaign will mean that shoppers will use the bag instead of disposable plastic carriers. Tesco currently gives away 40 million carrier bags a week and Sainsbury's gives out 23 million.
