Richmond council launches banks for small electrical items

London Borough of Richmond Upon Thames council has announced that residents can now recycle small electrical items at 20 new community recycling banks.

Twenty bright pink banks have been installed in "convenient locations" throughout Richmond

The council said that the scheme will make it “extremely simple” for residents to responsibly dispose of unwanted small electrical items, “rather than tossing them in the bin”.

The new initiative is said to be among the largest of over 40 UK projects funded by Material Focus, the not-for-profit organisation behind the Recycle Your Electricals campaign.

Recycle Your Electricals is a UK-wide campaign, aiming to “motivate and making it easier for everyone to reuse and recycle unwanted electricals”.

Recycle Your Electricals’ research states that the UK discard “155,000 tonnes” of electricals every year, instead of reusing or recycling them.

The campaign is said to apply to “anything with a plug, battery or cable up to the size of a two-slice toaster”, which can then be recycled and turned into something new.

Convenient

Twenty new bright pink banks have been installed in “convenient locations” throughout Richmond, in addition to the 10 small electrical recycling wheelie bins located at most of the area’s libraries.

Additionally, households that currently receive kerbside recycling collections can now easily recycle small electrical items from home.

Residents can do this by presenting used, broken and unwanted small electrical items next to their weekly mixed container collections, in a standard-size, open carrier bag.

WEEE Conference

WEEE collections will be front and centre of the WEEE Conference, taking place on 21 March.
