Reuse shop added at Worthing Recycling Centre

West Sussex county council has opened a new reuse shop alongside its Worthing Recycling Centre on Willowbrook Road.

It is the second reuse shop to be opened in the area – with the first located at Bllinghurst Recycling Centre. The council said that its first site had saved over 51 tonnes of materials for reuse since it was opened in March 2022.

Councillor Deborah Urquhart, West Sussex county council cabinet member for environment and climate change, said: “The first Reuse shop in Billingshurst has been so popular we decided to expand with a second Reuse shop in Worthing.

“The success of this initiative highlights just how important sustainability and waste prevention are to our residents. Our Council Plan is underpinned by a cross-cutting theme of protecting the environment and encouraging residents to buy and donate preloved items at the Reuse shops is a way to achieve this that benefits everyone.”

The reuse shop welcomes any of the following items which are still in good working order:

  • Bags, handbags, baskets and boxes
  • Bikes, scooters, skateboards
  • Board games, puzzles and children’s toys
  • Books, DVDs, CDs and records
  • Candles, tea light holders and vases
  • Crockery, plant pots, pots and pans
  • Internal and external furniture (chairs, tables, desks)
  • Garden statues, mirrors and hanging baskets
  • Musical instruments and sports equipment
  • Silverware, suitcases, tools and toolboxes

To make a donation, the council asked that residents book an appointment slot so that staff are available to receive the items. Staff are unable to repair or refurbish items.

Appointments can be made for the same day or up to 14 days in advance here or by calling 01243 642106. The reuse shop can be accessed without entering the recycling centre.

Both sites are open five days a week, with Worthing being closed on Wednesday and Thursday and Billinghurst being closed on Thursday and Friday.
