Refuse collector killed in landfill accident

A refuse collector was killed yesterday (January 6) in an accident at an Onyx landfill site near Portsmouth, Hampshire.

It is understood that 60-year-old Archie Whitear fell under a lorry at the Paulsgrove site in Port Solent. Hampshire police are not treating his death as suspicious.

The Health and Safety Executive is leading the investigation into the incident. A spokesman said: “A two-man crew from Fareham Borough Council was putting waste into the Onyx landfill site. They believe Mr Whitear fell under the lorry's front wheels.”

Fareham Borough Council, which employed Mr Whitear as a refuse collector in its health and environment department for 37 years, extended its deepest sympathy to his family.

An inquest into the death will open later today (January 7).
