Recycling awards search stepped up

The search for entries for the 2005 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management has stepped up as deadline gets closer.

The awards, which are organised by letsrecycle.com in association with Resource Management and Recovery Magazine, are aimed at showcasing innovation, dedication and success in recycling and sustainable waste management.

”The awards are unique in spanning both the recycling and waste management sectors “
– Steve Eminton, Letsrecycle.com

Positive coverage

Winners of last years best local authority recycling initiative was South Cambridgeshire district council. Sally Carroll, the council's communications manager, said: “We secured good, positive media coverage in our local newspapers, parish magazines and radio stations at the time of the award and references to it have been ongoing throughout the year.

“But most of all, winning the award has been a terrific “thank you” to all those residents who have made it happen and proof that everyone's hard work is really paying off,” she added.

Judges

The panel of judges – under the chair of Jeff Cooper, producer responsibility policy manager at the Environment Agency – includes Linda Crichton, manager of the ROTATE programme; Steve Eminton, editor, letsrecycle.com; Mark Filley, Waste Implementation Programme; Barbara Herridge, Waste Watch; Rebecca Huck, Wales Environmental Trust; Marian Kelly, Environmental Services Association; Lee Marshall, LARAC; and Chris Murphy, Chartered Institution of Wastes Management.

Commenting on the awards, MR Eminton said: “We were delighted with the response we received to the inaugural awards last year. Not just the volume of entries we received, but the sheer quality of work that we were able to showcase.

“The awards are unique in spanning both the recycling and waste management sectors and we hope to do even better this year,” he added.

Entrants must publish a 500-750 word summary of how they have achieved their success, which should be based on the last financial year (April 2004 – March 2005). Relevant information may be submitted to work prior to that period, provided successes are continuing.
