Bakers’ Inside Out Academy is currently set up in five prisons across the UK, designed to provide inmates with valuable skills and opportunities that equips them for the future.
In light of recent comments by Charlie Taylor, chief inspector of prisons, regarding the challenges of the UK government’s early-release programme, the Inside Out Academy has said it provides a “critical solution”.
Results show that inmates who participate in the programme are said to show lower recidivism rates and higher levels of motivation, with the reoffending rate dropping to just 25% for prisoners released with skills to go into employment, compared to 60% without.
Recognising these benefits, the scheme has been linked to early release opportunities, offering a “tangible incentive” for prisoners to engage and excel in their rehabilitation.
In addition to in-prison training, Bakers also offers job opportunities and career progression upon release.
‘Crucial’
Paul Baker, managing director at Bakers, said: “The need for effective rehabilitation programmes has never been greater, especially with the government’s proposed early-release scheme. Baker’s Inside Out Academy is designed to ensure that inmates are well-prepared for their transition back into society.
“By equipping them with valuable skills and job opportunities, we are not only reducing reoffending but also supporting their successful reintegration. This initiative is crucial in providing the support and training that are essential for early release to be truly effective.”
Bakers has announced that plans are underway to expand the Inside Out Academy programme to more prisoners across the UK, and also introduce certified qualifications that inmates can obtain.
