Recycling and waste management success to gain recognition

Letsrecycle.com has taken delivery of the coveted trophies for the 2004 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

The nine winners will be unveiled at a ceremony on Thursday at the Savoy Hotel in London. Elliot Morley will be present at the awards to make the keynote address, while the ceremony will be presided over by broadcaster Darren Jordon.

Categories at the awards will highlight the recycling and waste accomplishments of waste producers, commercial organisations, local authorities and waste management companies as well as highlighting the work of individual collection crews.

The awards trophies themselves have been designed and hand-crafted by North Wales-based designer Anne Smith. They are made from recycled glass collected in North Wales by recycling company GTR Gwynedd.

With a distinctive design, the awards were made from recycled windows and bottles, Ms Smith explained. “The award plates were made in layers, with the green and blue letsrecycle.com logo cut from green and blue bottle glass on a template, which are then sandwiched between two pains of window glass. The kiln fuses the layers together over 24-hours at about 900 degrees centigrade.”

The plates were then allowed to “slump” to get into their curved shape in a mould over another 24-hour period in the kiln at about 800 degrees centigrade, she said.

Ms Smith's design business, Anne Smith Glass Designs, is based in Gwynedd and specialises in stained and fused glass, and has recently exhibited at the Cochrene Theatre Gallery exhibition.
