The new scheme has started in the Yarm, Eaglescliffe, Kirklevington and Eaglescliffe areas, and will be spread across the borough over the coming year.
Each household will receive a plastic box for used bottles, jars, cans and textiles, which will be collected every fortnight by Hartlepool based contractor SWS. A separate reusable bag will be provided for newspapers, magazines and junk mail.
Steve Nelson, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We don’t want people to just turf out their rubbish, we want them to realise the importance of recycling and just how easy it is to be green. We welcome everyone in the borough to pitch in to support the scheme.”
The event launch featured Mr Winter showing a ‘yellow card’ to those who are reluctant to recycle, plus presentations on the theme from local school pupils.
