R Collard opens Hampshire MRF

By Will Date

Demolition and construction waste firm R Collard has this month opened a materials recycling facility (MRF) capable of treating in excess of 100,000 tonnes of material per year at its site in Eversley, Hampshire.

The facility forms a part of a 2 million investment in the site, with further plans to build a wash plant which will enable the company to produce a more refined product from fines material for which planning permission was received last month.

The company hopes that the MRF investment will enable it to eliminate the need to send any material to landfill, with around 5% of the material processed at the site currently going through this route.

Kit was installed on site by machinery supplier Blue Mac combining advanced sizing, density separation, magnet separation as well as hand sorting via a 12-berth hand picking station.

The company produces a range of products including screened topsoils, woodchip and sand and shingle sized aggregates much of which is produced at an aggregates screening plant run by Collards on a site adjacent to the MRF facility.

Recyclable fractions of waste recovered through the MRF will be sent offsite for recycling while it is also expected that a non-recyclable refuse derived fuel (RDF) fraction will be recovered, which will also be sent for onward processing.

Sorting

Sorting of the waste had previously been done manually in a separate area on-site, but Collards hopes that the new plant will help to increase the sites overall efficiency as well as allowing it to process a greater volume of material.

Waste to feed the facility, which began operating last week, will be sourced via the companys demolition and skip hire arm. Building work on the site began in late 2013 with steel beams used in the construction of the plant recovered from the demolition of a building in Crawley.
