Priority place for sustainable development in Queen&#39s Speech

The new Labour government today pledged through the Queen's Speech that sustainable development will be a priority for it.

Work to raise recycling rates and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill come under the broad umbrella of sustainable development, which is being promoted by the recently created Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

In her speech, the Queen said: “Tackling climate change and making a reality of sustainable development will be a priority for my government. It will fulfil the United Kingdom's international obligations arising from the Kyoto Protocol.”
