Powys community groups to get 19 per tonne recycling credits

Three new recycling sites in south Powys have been adopted by community groups giving them the opportunity to raise funds.

Brecon 1st Scout Group, Crickhowell Rotary Club and Talgarth Environment Group have taken over sites in their respective communities and Powys County Council will pay 19 for every tonne of materials they collect.

Silas Jones, waste minimisation officer with the council commented: “In return for the payment we ask the group to clean the site daily, and arrange for collection when the skips are full.

“We estimate that – between them – they will be able to raise many thousands of pounds for their groups,” said Mr Jones.

He explained that Powys now supports a number of community groups for running 23 sites throughout the county. Last year, some 40,000 was paid to community groups for their valuable work in helping the authority to achieve its waste recycling targets.
