Pressing regulatory and policy issues surrounding packaging waste and PRNs are set to be discussed at a special one-day conference being held in central London on September 30.
The ‘Fresh Horizons on Packaging Waste' event brings together government officials and leading industry experts to discuss, debate and exchange information about the current topics at the forefront of the packaging waste sector.
It will also address financial issues relating to packaging waste, and comes as the Environment Agency recently acknowledged it was “not immediately obvious” where all revenue from packaging recovery notes (PRNs) was spent last year (see letsrecycle.com story).
And, in the wake of the consultation document on packaging waste being issued by the government in March this year, this event will provide a follow-up opportunity to discuss many of the areas involved which are still live and undecided.
Commenting on the event, Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: “This conference will explore what lies ahead for the packaging sector and what recycling targets may look like in the future as the government undertakes a wide-ranging review of waste policy.
“It will also tackle issues relevant to the local authority and retail sector in terms of PRN costs and funding for collections. With many companies still uncertain about what to expect next year, there has never been a better time to hear from the experts.”
Event
With much speculation currently surrounding the packaging waste industry, such an event comes at the best possible time to address crucial issues in the sector. With key industry speakers covering hot topics, anyone involved in packaging waste should not miss this event.
Speakers at the event include Judicaelle Hammond, head of producer responsibility at Defra, Greg Wood, packaging programme manager at WRAP, Angus Macpherson, managing director of the Environment Exchange (t2e) and Adrian Hawkes, director of policy at producer responsibility and recycling firm Valpak.
Among the key discussion points at the event are:
-
Policy, regulation and data
-
Finance and packaging waste
-
Plastics and aluminium – two challenging material sectors
-
Future trends and the role of the packaging sector
Gareth Goodall of scrap-ex, sponsor of the event, added: “The scrap-ex team is delighted to be involved in this event and the important debate about possible changes to policy and targets in the PRN system. Against the background of general economic uncertainty our objective is to remain neutral and independent whilst assisting our clients to meet the challenges ahead.”
